Krispy Kreme Japan is introducing a unique twist on traditional Japanese dessert flavors with its latest creation, the Kome-Dough Kuromitsu Kinako. Known for offering exclusive Japan-only flavors like sakura and anko, Krispy Kreme has taken a step further by altering the filling or glaze and changing the dough. The Kome-Dough line uses Japanese rice flour, a staple ingredient in the country's cuisine.
The name “Kome” comes from the Japanese word for rice, and Krispy Kreme's new Kome-Dough donuts are crafted from rice flour produced from domestically grown grains. According to the company, this innovative dough imparts a subtle, natural sweetness characteristic of Japanese rice. It adds a chewy texture to the donuts, making them stand out in flavor and feel.
This isn’t the first time Krispy Kreme Japan has experimented with rice flour donuts. Last November, the chain briefly introduced them under the name “Komeco,” the positive response from customers led to the permanent addition of rice-flour donuts on the menu under the new Kome-Dough line. The debut flavor, Kuromitsu Kinako, features a kinako (roasted soybean) glaze and powdered topping, along with a swirl of kuromitsu (a molasses-like brown sugar syrup), both popular ingredients in traditional Japanese desserts.
The Kome-Dough Kuromitsu Kinako will be available nationwide starting November 1, priced at 313 yen (US$2.25).

In 2023, Krispy Kreme Japan introduced two limited-time donuts, available exclusively at a single location in the country, combining fall flavors with traditional Japanese ingredients. As the first day of fall approached, the JR Nagoya Takashimaya Krispy Kreme location in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, unveiled its latest additions to the Premium Nagoya series on September 13. These two luxurious flavors are crafted on-site and perfectly capture autumn's rich, comforting tastes.
According to SoraNews24, the first offering is the Krispy Kreme Premium Nagoya Japanese Chestnut And Butter donut. This creation highlights Japan’s love for chestnuts in baked goods, featuring a fried dough sandwich filled with lightly sweetened chestnut sweet bean paste, known as “an” in Japanese. Adding to the indulgence is a thick slab of Hokkaido butter, paying homage to Nagoya’s historical role in popularizing the combination of an and butter. The delicate chestnut fragrance enhances the seasonal appeal, making it a perfect fall treat.
The second donut is the Krispy Kreme Premium Nagoya Brulée Glazed Hojicha donut. This option combines Krispy Kreme’s signature original glazed donut with a rich hojicha (roasted green tea) cream and smooth white chocolate. Topped with hojicha powder from Nishio City in Aichi Prefecture, each bite offers a delightful mix of crunchy, soft, and creamy textures, evoking the essence of autumn.
Premium Nagoya donuts are available at 368 yen (US$2.49) each for a limited time.
