LG Electronics and Corning Inc. have come together to work on curved glass displays for vehicles. Through their partnership that was announced this week, they will be developing the said product and planning to supply them to premium carmakers in Europe.
LG Electronics and Corning Inc. announced on Wednesday, Dec. 14, that they have signed an agreement for the joint development of a glass solution for curved displays that will be specifically made for vehicles. As per Pulse News, the companies will look for buyers of the display products that they will make, and the main target customers are the prime European car manufacturers.
They will be offering curved display glasses that will be made by fusing the expertise of LG Electronics in automotive electronics technology and Corning's glass-making mastery. They will design the curved display in a way that will effectively support drivers with in-car connectivity. While they will be making this innovative product, LG Electronics and Corning will make sure they will also produce this with a smaller carbon footprint.
The project will also serve as LG Electronics' stepping stone as it gradually expands its business into in-vehicle infotainment (IVN) systems. The South Korean company will apply Corning's patented ColdForm technology to improve and refine in-vehicle connectivity while reducing carbon emissions. This technology presents an innovative curved display with a 25% carbon footprint reduction compared to the regular process of forming glass.
"The desire for user-friendly in-vehicle connectivity through advanced interior design necessitates innovative products and processes," LG Electronics' president of the vehicle component solutions unit, Eun Seok Hyun, said in a press release. "We are proud to partner with Corning to introduce unprecedented innovations into the industry that deliver curved display modules to enhance the user experience, such as special adhesive and forming systems, set the trend while achieving sustainability goals."
Mike Kunigonis, Corning Automotive Glass Solution's vice president and general manager, added, "As consumers and automakers continue to prioritize more-sustainable technologies to help meet climate goals, Corning's ColdForm Technology can help drive this industry progress.
