The modders behind the modding tool OpenIV recently announced that the mod that would have brought Liberty City to life using the assets of Grand Theft Auto V has been canceled. According to the modders, the project clashed with Rockstar’s modding policy, which forced the group to abandon their work. This is bound to be an unpopular turn of events, as Take-Two Interactive learned the first time they messed with the modding community.
The last time Liberty City was featured in an official GTA game was GTA IV, the hit installment that involved an Eastern European protagonist taking on the city’s underworld. Pretty standard stuff, as far as GTA games are concerned. On the other hand, the city is interesting and lively enough that OpenIV wanted to bring it over to the latest game. Thanks to Rockstar, this is not going to happen, Gamespot reports.
Announcing the cancellation on GTA Forums, the group stated that due to the mod clashing with the studio’s policies, it will have to stop working on the mod. This is a huge disappointment to the modders since it would have really pushed the boundaries for OpenIV and to fans because many were looking forward to racing through the streets of the Manhattan-inspired setting.
“Unfortunately, our highly anticipated mod ‘Liberty City in GTA V’ will not be released because it clearly contradicts with Rockstar modding policy. Liberty City mod is a big loss for us, since it was a huge part of our motivation to push OpenIV functionality,” the post reads. “If you are wondering what is next, well, we are currently revising our plans for the future.”
As to the particular part of the policies the mod violates, it seems to involve the use of Rockstar’s IP. Basically, modders are free to add whatever they want to the single-player game for as long as it’s not one of their own properties.
