A social media post from Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and wife Priscilla Chan announced the birth of their firstborn daughter named Max. The Los Angeles Times said the public letter, of which Zuckerberg had addressed it to his baby girl, showed the couple’s concern about her future and her generation’s future.
A portion of the letter read, "Like all parents, we want you to grow up in a world better than ours today. Our society has an obligation to invest now."
In that line of thought, the Zuckerbergs announced that they will personally donate 99% of their Facebook shares during their lifetimes to charity. Forbes.com said the donation is valued at a whopping USD45 billion. The promise was later made official in a US Securities and Exchange Commission filing.
The couple detailed the areas of focus they will attend to under their promise to donate, which was named the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.
The letter read, “Our initial areas of focus will be personalized learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities.”
