Most of the video games based on Marvel IPs have featured fighting, action, action-adventure elements in previous years. However, an unannounced project from the developers of “DC Universe Online” could deliver a new experience using massively multiplayer online mechanics.
The report comes after Enad Global 7 released its slideshow presentation for investors (via Eurogamer) that also tackles the ongoing video game projects of its subsidiaries launching in 2022 and beyond. Under its “longer-term” developments is an unannounced MMORPG described as a “Marvel IP based massively multiplayer online game.”
It was mentioned several times in the presentation, but details are, unsurprisingly, scarce about the Marvel MMO. The company document only reveals that it is being developed by the Austin, Texas-based Dimensional Ink Studios led by Jack Emmert, who has also been leading the ongoing maintenance of “DC Universe Online.”
Twitch streamer Miller noted that the unnamed Marvel MMO game was one of the thousands of titles mentioned in the massive Nvidia GeForce Now leak last September. Miller added that the project was previously canceled in 2018 due to “financial hardships.”
The home page of Dimensional Ink’s official website does mention an “unannounced project.” It offers no details about the game, but considering the new details from EG7, it likely refers to the Marvel MMO. The Careers page also shows the studio is actively recruiting new developers for the same project with open positions for a senior animator, technical artist, senior programmer, and senior designer for combat for the unannounced project.
What is quite clear for now is that the new Marvel MMO will not be released anytime soon. Given that it is currently listed as one of the long-term projects for EG7, it would not be surprising if the game does not arrive for a few years.
However, the fact that it is developed by the same studio and will be released under the same genre, the Marvel MMO could share similar elements with the 10-year-old “DC Universe Online.” The game set in the world of DC Comics is free-to-play and also features action combat mechanics with 41 episodes released in the last decade.
While Dimensional Ink appears to be already working on the Marvel MMO in some capacity, the studio recently confirmed its intention to continuously support “DC Universe Online.” The developer will introduce the game’s 42nd episode titled “Legion of Doom” next month and Episode 43 sometime in 2022.
