When BioWare officially announced the "Mass Effect Legendary Edition" last November, it was initially thought that all base game content and DLCs would be included. However, the developer confirmed that the trilogy's only multiplayer gameplay and a DLC for the first game are missing.
'Mass Effect Legendary Edition' is launching without a multiplayer game mode
The promise of including all base games, expansion packs, and other DLCs to the remastered trilogy is still true for the most part. And for those that did not make the cut, BioWare has offered understandable explanations why they were unable to include them in "Mass Effect Legendary Edition."
A multiplayer game mode was not introduced in the "Mass Effect" series until the third main title installment in 2012. Its launch has then marked a significant development in the history of the franchise.
Aside from allowing players to complete missions in a group, the need for cooperating gameplay was also related to the third game's plot's progressions. The way players performed in multiplayer and their in-game choices affected how their game will end and whether they get the high-tier conclusions. When the final expansion "Citadel" was released, there were also multiplayer-focused DLC items.
Despite the multiplayer being that important to "Mass Effect 3," BioWare could not accommodate it in the final version of "Mass Effect Legendary Edition." Project director Mac Walters explained that pushing to include multiplayer would have taken away time and the team's focus away from the single-player gameplay contents.
As for the endings, Walters told The Verge that the remastered collection was rebalanced to account for the lack of the multiplayer. "It is intended to get those best endings, or the higher tier endings — I won't say which one is best or worst — but obviously playing will be easier," Walters said. "We just basically took that section out and redistributed."
'Pinnacle Station' DLC is not included in 'Mass Effect Legendary Edition' too
The "Mass Effect Legendary Edition" is also launching without one single-player expansion from the first game due to a relatable reason. The "Pinnacle Station" was the second expansion pack released for the first-ever "Mass Effect" and highlighted a special ops training of Commander Shepard's squad.
Unfortunately, BioWare confirmed that all the backup data for the "Pinnacle Station" — including those kept by developer Demiurge — had been corrupted. Walters told Game Informer that it would have taken the team an extra "full six months" to remake the expansion. "Mass Effect Legendary Edition" will be released on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on May 14. Backward compatibility will allow console players to access it on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
