US Federal Trade Commission's lawsuit against Amazon has sparked calls from the platform's merchants for reduced fees amid worries about the company's advertising business efficiency.
According to reports from Apparel Resources, the highly anticipated antitrust lawsuit seeks to explore the possibility of compelling Amazon to divest certain assets. The government's allegations revolve around Big Tech's alleged monopolization of the most lucrative aspects of the Internet.
Impact on Amazon's Marketplace and Merchants
With over 9 million merchants on its marketplace, Amazon collects various fees, including fulfillment, advertising, and less conventional "sellers' fees," as reported by EconoTimes.
However, the FTC, joined by 17 state attorneys general, is now pressuring Amazon to eliminate fees that burden merchants, such as costly advertising fees. While some merchants welcome the prospect of reduced fees, others express concerns about the potential consequences, as discontinuing Amazon's advertising services could hamper their ability to reach buyers.
FTC Investigation Reveals Surging Fulfillment Fees
According to an investigation by the FTC, Amazon's fulfillment fees have surged by nearly 30 percent between 2020 and 2022, as reported by Reuters. In response, an Amazon spokesperson expressed concerns over potentially limited product choices, higher prices, slower deliveries, and limited options for small businesses if the demands of the FTC were met.
Rick Dieterle, owner of the party supply company Street Taco Brands, voiced frustration over the rising vendor fees, including fulfillment, shipping, advertising, and storage services, as he heavily relies on Amazon's fulfillment and advertising services to drive his merchandise sales.

The FTC alleges that Amazon's advertising practices have flooded search results with sponsored content, creating obstacles for customers seeking organic results. As a result, Amazon.com merchants are demanding fee reductions, citing concerns about the potential impact on the company's advertising business.
