It is not a surprise that the Meta Quest 3 is coming, but now VR enthusiasts have a narrowed-down timeline for when it will enter the market. Several Meta executives confirmed this week that the device would be released sometime next year.
Three Meta executives, including CEO Mark Zuckerberg, CFO Dave Wehner, and finance VP Susan Li, confirmed that the Meta Quest 3 is scheduled to launch in 2023 during the company’s Q3 FY2022 earnings call on Wednesday. Interestingly, though, they did not mention Meta Quest 3 by name. In various segments of the earnings call, Zuckerberg, Wehner, and Li only referred to Meta Quest 3 as the “next generation of consumer Quest.”
The launch timeline for Meta Quest 3 was mentioned when the executives discussed the company’s expected cost of revenue for next year. “Conversely, our growth in cost of revenue is expected to accelerate, driven by infrastructure-related expenses and, to a lesser extent, Reality Labs hardware costs driven by the launch of our next generation of our consumer Quest headset later next year,” Wehner said.
Fans of the formerly known Oculus products have been waiting for the next VR headset, considering its predecessor, Quest 2, has been in the market for over two years now. Instead of launching Meta Quest 3 this year, though, the company released the $1,500 high-end Quest Pro headset.
This week’s earnings call was not the first time Zuckerberg confirmed the existence of Meta Quest 3. In an interview with Stratechery earlier this month, the Meta CEO said its imminent launch is hardly a surprise but reiterated that the device would not arrive this year. Zuckerberg said in the same interview that the Meta Quest 3 could be sold “in the price range of $300, $400, or $500.”
It means the tech giant is not planning on drastically increasing the price of its flagship VR headset next year. The currently available Quest 2 was introduced with a price tag starting at $299. Meta, however, implemented price hikes last August, citing rising manufacturing and shipping costs. The Quest 2 is now sold for $399 and $499 for its 128GB and 256GB variants, respectively.
