Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has confirmed that her administration has launched an official investigation into Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard following allegations involving his son’s stay at a diplomatic residence in the United Kingdom. The inquiry, initiated after formal complaints were filed with Mexico’s anti-corruption and good governance authority, aims to determine whether any laws or regulations were violated during the incident.
According to reports, Ebrard’s adult son lived for approximately six months at the Mexican ambassador’s residence in London between 2021 and 2022 while pursuing his studies. At the time, Ebrard was serving as Mexico’s foreign minister. Although Ebrard publicly acknowledged the arrangement, he firmly denied any misuse of public funds, describing the decision as an act motivated by “a father’s concern” rather than any official privilege.
However, the situation has drawn scrutiny after Spanish newspaper El País reported that the residence provided access to household staff, including a butler, cook, and cleaning personnel during the son’s stay. These details have raised questions about the potential use of government resources for personal purposes, prompting the current investigation.
President Sheinbaum stated during her daily press briefing that the process is automatic once complaints are submitted, emphasizing that the responsible agency will independently assess whether ethical or legal boundaries were crossed. The outcome of the investigation could carry political implications, especially given Ebrard’s key role in leading Mexico’s negotiations with the United States and Canada on renewing a critical trilateral trade agreement.
The case also highlights the historically complex relationship between Sheinbaum and Ebrard. Both were prominent contenders for the ruling Morena Party’s presidential nomination in the 2024 election, during which tensions escalated over allegations of campaign irregularities. Despite their rivalry, Sheinbaum appointed Ebrard as economy minister after her victory, citing his diplomatic experience and strong ties to international stakeholders.
As the investigation unfolds, it may influence both domestic political dynamics and Mexico’s economic negotiations on the global stage.
