Mercedes CEO Toto Wolff recently placed Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton on a pedestal as he called both racing icons the best drivers to ever grace the grid of Formula One. This is despite the fact that Hamilton is still two championships behind Schumacher’s seven F1 titles. Wolff added that motorsports fans should be celebrating Lewis Hamilton’s abilities now rather than waiting for him to retire, TheSportsRush reported.
“Lewis, in my opinion, along with Michael [Schumacher], are the best we have ever seen. We’re only going to realize when he retires one day. We tend to never acknowledge somebody’s great performance while it happens,” Wolff shared.
This gleaming praise is the complete opposite of what Jacques Villeneuve said last year. According to the Canadian racer, Lewis Hamilton has already proven that he’s better than Michael Schumacher even though the former is still two titles short.
When asked why he believes this to be the case, Villeneuve cited Lewis Hamilton’s pristine reputation inside the grid. “He’s never resorted to any questionable actions to win and he’s always on top of his game. It’s been very impressive,” the former racer said. While this point may be up for debate, Villeneuve does have cause to feel this way.
In 1997, the two racers met during the Spanish Grand Prix where Villeneuve tried to overtake Michael Schumacher on lap 48. In a seemingly premeditated maneuver, Schumacher slammed his vehicle onto Villeneuve’s own resulting in the former retiring from the race, Telegraph reported.
Since then, some fans and analysts of the motorsports world viewed Michael Schumacher in a negative light. But that is a lifetime ago since the German racer hasn’t been on the grid for years.
Right now, Michael Schumacher is still trying to recover from his skiing accident that robbed some of his motor and cognitive skills. News about his convalesce is few and far in between as the family remains reticent about the legend’s health condition.
