Fans of the “Halo” video game series are closer to getting a much-awaited new installment after Microsoft-owned 343 Industries unveiled “Halo Infinite” during its Electronic Entertainment press event on Sunday.
Developers showcased a two-minute teaser rendered from their Slipspace Engine and previewed the world to be explored in “Halo Infinite.”
The trailer, however, did not feature any sneak peek at the title’s gameplay and plot. But 343 Industries did confirm in a blog post that the upcoming game is set after the events of “Halo 5” and will focus on continuing the story of the Master Chief.
In the same blog, 343 Industries reiterated that the images shown in the trailer are “running in-engine,” which holds a huge promise of what “Halo Infinite” can become as a fully released game. The company needed to build its own tech, now called the Slipspace Engine, after realizing that it needed a new system that can cater to the “ambitious” vision of “Halo Infinite.”
The release of “Halo Infinite’s” first trailer is generally a good sign that the production of the game is rolling. However, even 343 Industries admitted that the title still has “a long way to go” before it goes gold.
“I know waiting can be hard for folks who are excited for more info about the game. We are taking the time we need to make the right game and are making changes to how we approach things this time around. The goal of the entire 343 Industries team is to make a great Halo game for our fans that also invites new players into our franchise,” 343 Industries studio head Chris Lee said.
Even though the upcoming game is billed as a sequel, Microsoft and 343 Industries are billing “Halo Infinite” as a next-generation game for the “Halo” series which will introduce a new approach in building its gameplay.
Obviously, the next installment loses the numbered branding, which posed the question of whether a “Halo 6” is also in order. To this, Xbox GM for games marketing Aaron Greenberg told YouTube Live (via Polygon), “This is the next Halo game. Think of this as moving from the numbering to let’s do something completely different.”
