Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton have been divorced for roughly four years now. But their names would still appear together in headlines, especially when one of them seemingly makes a reference about the other while performing on national TV and on one of the biggest stage for American country music.
That was likely what happened when Lambert graced the stage of the 2019 American Country Music Awards last Sunday and performed the song “Little Red Wagon.” Instead of singing the real lyrics “I live in Oklahoma,” the 35-year-old music artist sang, “I got the hell out of Oklahoma.” Reports were quick to note that she and Shelton used to live in the state during their four-year marriage.
Throwing shade in major events is nothing new but what makes this one even more interesting is that Lambert walked that red carpet that night with her new husband, Brendan McLoughlin from the New York Police Department. Shelton, as expected, arrived with his long-time girlfriend Gwen Stefani.
However, if Lambert did intend to aim that altered song lyrics to her ex-husband, her efforts might have been futile. InTouch magazine (via Life & Style) later reported that Shelton and Stefani might have temporarily left their seats during the commercial break that precedes Lambert’s performance. Notably, PEOPLE also pointed out that it was “not clear” if Shelton and Stefani did stay on their seats to watch Lambert’s set.
Despite the uncertainty on whether Shelton and Stefani left before Lambert took the stage, sources of HollywoodLife claimed that Stefani has some thoughts about Lambert’s choices. One of the insiders said Stefani took the incident as proof that “Miranda is still thinking about Blake even though she is married.” The pop star and fashion designer allegedly felt like Shelton’s ex acted “a little petty.” Meanwhile, the same publication’s tipster added that Lambert’s performance did not affect Stefani and Shelton’s weekend together. The “The Voice” coach also performed at the 2019 ACM Awards.
However, there are doubts that Stefani or Shelton would have comments about Lambert’s performance. Gossip Cop also recalled that Sunday’s performance was not the first time Lambert switched up song lyrics to accurately sing she is no longer living in Oklahoma. The fact-checking outlet also recalled that Stefani’s rep once said they just pretend rumors “don’t exist” when previously asked for comment on an earlier HollywoodLife article.
