In the Iron Man and Avengers movies, Tony Stark’s virtual butler Jarvis was voiced by English actor Paul Bettany. In the real-life Jarvis that Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg is trying to create, it would seem that revered pop-culture icon Morgan Freeman is the popular choice. For those wondering if he would do it, the answer is yes, yes he will.
Fans of Mr. Freeman would be well aware of his body of work, which includes multiple movies where he didn’t even make an appearance, but instead simply did the voiceover. So when Zuckerberg decided to do a public poll on who should voice the home AI he was working on, the man who was once God won, Tech Radar reports.
Other actors were apparently up for consideration as well, with Robert “Iron Man” Downey Jr. and Arnold “The Terminator” Schwarzenegger close behind Mr. Freeman. In the end, the people spoke, and they knew that there was just one voice that would do Jarvis justice.
In a recent interview, Zuckerberg told Fast Company that after he did the public polling, he contacted the award-winning actor to make his pitch. When he asked if Mr. Freeman would do it following an award ceremony, he got a positive response.
"I called him after," Zuckerberg said to the publication, "and I said, ‘Hey, I posted this thing, and...thousands of people want you to be the voice. Will you do it?’"
Before anyone becomes too excited about the prospect of one day having a virtual butler that sounds like Morgan Freeman, it is worth noting that Zuckerberg’s Jarvis project is still a long way off. So far, the social media figure has only sunk in about 100 to 150 hours of work into the AI.
Then again, Zuckerberg has been largely working on the project on his own, with presumably some help from his programmers. If he decides to get serious about Jarvis, he might actually have a working model in a few years. At that point, Mr. Freeman’s soothing voice would be at the command of users.
