The “Moto Z” modular phone by the once great Motorola mobile company has gotten a lot of attention lately because of its customizable feature. Users can add speakers, projectors or even extra batteries by slapping on a mod on the device, but this is just the beginning. Motorola just released its developer kit for users to create their own mods if they had the tools, allowing for practically unlimited possibilities with the phone.
One of the most appealing aspects of the Moto Z is its modular nature. The accessories that magnetically stick to the back of the Moto Z are called Moto Mods, according to CNET, and developers can access their own mods so that they can create their own features.
By allowing users to add as many features as available to the phone whenever they want, the company is essentially giving customers the more control on their experience with the device. The only other phone that provides the same services is the “LG G5,” and that unit is nowhere near as affordable as the “Moto Z.”
Right now, the “Moto Z” and “Moto Z Force” are only available with Verizon. However, an unlocked version is set to come out sometime in the future.
Aside from the developer kit, the company has also released the “Mod Manager” app. Anyone who has ever played a video game on the PC will see the humor in doing this for an actual device in the real world.
In any case, the addition of the app is great for avoiding firmware in the future, the Android Police reports. There’s also a second manager, though this one is meant specifically for the projector mod.
The biggest implication with regards to the “Mod Manager,” however, is the ability of Motorola to increase the functionality and features of the different mods, and have a working platform with which to control all of them. The company wouldn’t have to overstretch themselves whenever a new mod comes along.
