NVIDIA has verified that the forthcoming GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER GPU includes the full 48 MB L2 cache for AD104 processors.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER GPU Confirmed To Have Full 48 MB L2 Cache On AD104 Chip
When NVIDIA launched the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER graphics card last week, the specifications sheet claimed a 20% increase in the core count for the AD104 GPU over the RTX 4070, but the L2 cache was reported as the same 36 MB, as per WCCFTech.
NVIDIA has now acknowledged that the 36 MB statistic was incorrect and has updated its product pages to reflect the right cache capacity, which is 48 MB, the same as the RTX 4070 Ti GPU.
A greater L2 cache is critical for a GPU such as the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER. It features a 192-bit memory bus interface and is designed for high-refresh-rate 1080p and 1440p gaming PCs. Extra details, such as higher-res textures and resolution, can cause bottlenecks in the memory subsystem.
While the RTX 4070 SUPER is equipped with the newest G6X memory, there are still some circumstances where the memory can get stressed and cause gaming slowdowns. A massive L2 cache near the GPU offers a high-speed link between all GPCs, allowing data to be sent back and forth.
As such, having 48 MB of L2 cache on the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER GPU is unquestionably a good option that would be a significant improvement over the non-SUPER model.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER GPU Specs Include Upgraded AD104 GPU With 20% More Cores
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER will be available in AD104-350 or AD103-175 GPU (PG141 SKU 335) configurations, both of which will have the same 7,168 cores. The GPU is planned to receive 36 megabytes of L2 cache. The card will maintain the 12 GB GDDR6X memory across the same 192-bit bus interface. The RTX 4070 SUPER will have a 20W greater TBP than the current 4070 at 220W.
The card has 36 Shader TFLOPs, 82 RT TFLOPs, and 568 AI TOPs and supports all of the newest NV encode technologies, including AV1 and H.264. All of this brings the RTX 4070's performance to 95% of that of the 4070 Ti.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER GPU Faster Than RTX 3090, Only 5% Slower Than 4070 Ti On Average
In terms of gaming performance, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER is said to be approximately 15% quicker than the RTX 4070 Non-SUPER, representing the most significant increase in the SUPER series. The card is also said to be faster than an RTX 3090 without frame generation. However, actual performance will vary by game. NVIDIA also confirmed that the card is only 5% slower than an RTX 4070 Ti, which retails for $799 USD. The RTX 4070 Ti SUPER has also replaced that.
AI is a major talking point for the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER and the RTX 40 SUPER series in general, delivering up to 2x faster performance with DLSS 3.5, 70% faster image generation, and 50% faster video generation speeds thanks to ML optimizations via the Tensor-RT and Tensor-RT LLM stack, which has been available on Windows and is being updated on the fly.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER GPU Has Absolutely Shattering Performance Per Watt
Another highlight of the NVIDIA GeForce RT 40 SUPER GPUs, such as the RTX 4070 SUPER, is their class-leading performance efficiency. While the GPU is rated at 220W, the typical gaming wattage is about 200W, which is less than half the TGP of the RTX 4090 and far less than what the Radeon RX 7900 series consumes.
The 7800 XT is rated at a much higher 263W TBP. The video playback power is likewise 16W out of the box, but the idle power is 11W, which the AMD RDNA 3 GPUs struggled to address at launch. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER GPU will be available on January 17 in both Founders Edition and bespoke configurations, with pricing starting at $599 USD.
