Gamers have made their feelings toward Konami quite clear over the past several years, but many are still attached to their IPs, including Castlevania. This is why the recent announcement that a new game from the series would be coming to mobile is likely to be of interest to some fans. Called Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls, it will feature a new story with some new characters.
According to the new game’s official website, as translated by Gematsu, the story will be set in the time when Dracula is still dead. The game kicks off when a letter containing a warning about the dark lord’s inevitable return is sent to someone named Genya Arikado, who is basically a spy.
“A future where Count Dracula has been completely destroyed. It seemed like eternal peace came upon the world,” the site reads. “However, a single letter delivered to Genya Arikado tried to put an end to that peaceful era.
“In order to verify the meaning of the words written in the letter—“The Grimoire has run wild and Count Dracula will be resurrected”—Genya Arikado heads off towards the letter’s sender.”
As Den of Geek notes, the best part about this announcement is that the title is actually going to be an action game instead of one of those ridiculous puzzle apps or visual novels trying to cash in on the Castlevania name. So, perhaps fans can take comfort in the fact that this announcement could have been so much worse. At least, it’s similar to the original 2D games.
The biggest difference compared to the originals is that the mobile title also emphasizes playing as a pair, instead of going at it alone. It’s apparently intended to be a complementary gaming mechanic, where the characters suit and support each other’s abilities during combat and other parts of the game.
