Regardless of how unoriginal the concept might be, Radical Heights by Boss Key Productions is officially out in Early Access. Gamers can now go to the game’s Steam page and take it for a spin at no charge. Much like Fortnite Battle Royale, it’s completely free. As to what players can expect from the game, it’s exactly the Early Access title that it is. The reviews have been mixed as of writing, though, so that’s something.
As Polygon notes, the most notable aspect of Radical Heights is that it is a game in a very early production stage. This means bugs galore, optimization issues, and missing features.
Such things are only to be expected from a game that’s barely out of Alpha-stage and the developers did note that they will use the feedback from the players within the year that the game will be in Early Access to get it up to scratch. For now, anyone interested in trying it out should know not to expect too much.
The more interesting aspect of this particular situation, however, is the fact that the game has actually only been in development for five months. This revelation comes directly from the title’s creative director, Zach Lowery.
“This is a [five-month] passion project for the studio as we’re creating and publishing the game entirely by ourselves,” Lowery said. “We’re huge fans of Battle Royale games along with the bright, inviting irreverence of the 80’s aesthetic. Because of that, we want to put our own spin on the genre and create a futuristic 80’s world that takes place in 2023 during an over-the-top game show where contestants battle it out for fame and prizes.”
As SlashGear notes, it’s exactly these quirks that Boss Key is hoping would help propel the game to fame. Unfortunately, it really does have a stiff competition in PlayerUnkown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite Battle Royale. These two titles alone are dominating practically every record there is to dominate and they’re not even finished yet. Suffice to say, Boss Key has its work cut out for it.
