New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters dismissed the country’s ambassador to the UK, Phil Goff, after remarks perceived as critical of U.S. President Donald Trump.
During a London forum, Goff, a former foreign minister and Labour Party member, questioned Trump’s historical understanding, contrasting his approach to Russia with Winston Churchill’s wartime leadership. "President Trump restored Churchill’s bust to the Oval Office. But does he truly understand history?" he asked.
Peters condemned the comments as "deeply disappointing," stating they did not reflect the New Zealand government’s position and rendered Goff’s role as High Commissioner "untenable." Bede Corry, a senior official in New Zealand’s foreign ministry, is managing the transition to a new ambassador.
Goff, appointed in 2023, has yet to respond. Peters, leader of the populist NZ First party, serves in the right-leaning coalition government.
