Nigeria’s Police Service Commission (PSC) approved promotions across several ranks and elevated two officers to deputy inspector-general (DIG), while the listed rank groups total 4,122 and reach 4,124 when the two senior promotions are included.
PSC spokesman Torty Njoku Kalu said the process included promotion examinations and oral interviews, according to a News Agency of Nigeria report carried by P.M. News. P.M. News and Vanguard reported that the approvals came at a plenary meeting in Abuja on Thursday, Oct. 29, chaired by PSC Chairman Hashimu Salihu Argungu.
Olaolu Adegbite, head of the INTERPOL National Central Bureau in Abuja, and Dankombo F. Morris, who heads Zone 4 Headquarters in Makurdi, were promoted to DIG. P.M. News and Vanguard reported that Morris previously served as commissioner of police in Adamawa State.
Assistant superintendents made up the largest listed group, with 3,218 promoted to deputy superintendent. The reported counts also included 498 deputy superintendents promoted to superintendent and 245 superintendents to chief superintendent. The remaining groups comprised 85 assistant commissioners promoted to deputy commissioner, 49 chief superintendents to assistant commissioner, 17 deputy commissioners to commissioner and 10 commissioners to assistant inspector-general (AIG). The seven groups total 4,122; including the two DIG promotions brings the arithmetic sum to 4,124.
The Sun reported 4,124 promotions overall. Punch’s headline listed 3,867 “others” after naming two DIGs and 10 AIGs; that figure does not reconcile with the listed rank counts, though its article text described more than 3,800 promotions. The Eagle Times alone reported a total of 3,829.
The Police Service Commission (Establishment) Act gives the PSC responsibility for appointments, promotions and discipline in the Nigeria Police Force, except for the Inspector-General of Police. In January 2026, the commission announced another round that promoted one officer to DIG, two to AIG and 26,119 inspectors to assistant superintendent II.
In the latest statement, Argungu urged the promoted officers to improve their performance in public safety and law enforcement, according to accounts carried by P.M. News and The Sun.
