Nigeria’s food-systems plan is being put into practice across the country, while a federal review lists unresolved needs in storage, funding, data and accountability on the path to 2030 targets.
The government review reported that Kebbi had constructed 43 rural feeder roads and that 30,000 farmers benefited from multipurpose threshers and reapers. It also called for more attention to storage, funding, data and accountability.
The review records Joyce Akpata, Head of Policy and Advocacy at the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), as putting the yearly funding gap for food-systems and malnutrition work at $2 billion. She identified transport, irrigation, markets and nutrition services as areas needing investment.
The UN Food Systems Coordination Hub said in January 2025 that all 36 states helped shape the implementation strategy, along with 14 federal ministries, departments and agencies focused on food and nutrition and development partners. Its update said implementation was active throughout the states and the Federal Capital Territory, with two reviews held each year.
The Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning says national food-systems dialogues produced 78 recommendations that Nigeria sent to the United Nations (UN) in September 2021. The ministry also listed 10 near-term actions for 2022 and 2023. The pathway’s 2030 goals include reducing hunger, food insecurity, malnutrition, poverty and youth unemployment, while lowering food imports and supporting sustainable food trade.
BusinessDay reported Nov. 1 that Sanjo Faniran, whom it identified as a national consultant for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), credited states with cooperating at a South-West zonal review meeting in Lagos.
A UN-listed joint program involving the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the World Food Programme (WFP) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) runs from May 2025 to May 2027. The program listing gives expected financial leverage of $10.5 million.
