Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. recalls more than 800,000 sports utility vehicles as it was discovered they could shut off while in the middle of driving. The affected SUV models are the Nissan Rogues and Nissan Rogue Sports which were sold in the United States and Canada.
Nissan issued a recall on Tuesday, Feb. 28, and the announcement was immediately made after the discovery of the technical problem that is causing the vehicles to suddenly shut off while being driven.
According to Fox Business, the Rogue SUVs were made from 2014 to 2020. Some Nissan Rouge Sports model units are also included in the recall, and these have model years of 2017 to 2020. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirmed the recall and issued a notice for it as well.
The government agency said the technical issue being dealt with is related to the SUVs' jackknife folding keys. The NHTSA said this creates a problem while driving because it does not reliably stay in an "extended" position.
Nissan Motor said its Rogue SUVs have jackknife keys that may not stay fully open and could fold up at some point. If the vehicle is being driven with a partially folded key, the driver may touch the fob and accidentally turn off the engine.
As a result, it may lead to loss of engine power and power brakes. What’s more, the airbags might not inflate in case of a crash. But fortunately, the vehicle maker said it is not aware of any crashes or injuries related to this issue.
The Washington Post reported that Nissan Motor is currently working to find a remedy and in the meantime, owners are advised to remove any accessories that they may have placed on their keys. The company will be formally notifying the owners of affected Rogue and Rogue Sports vehicles this month. It will send another notice once the fix for the issue is ready.
