“One Piece” episode 849 just dramatically amped up the stakes as the Whole Cake Island arc is coming to a close. Unable to escape Perospero's hard candy, Straw Hat Pirate cat man Pedro sacrificed himself to free the Thousand Sunny from the trap and give the rest of the Straw Hat Pirate crew a chance to escape. Episode 850 shows a Carrot going berserk against Katakuri due to Pedro's loss.
While Pedro's closeness with Carrot was not romantic, as a fellow mink, Pedro was supportive of her during her formative and training years. His death meant a blow to Carrot, similar to someone losing a parent or an older sibling.
During Carrot's rage flashback after Pedro's death, fans were treated to a montage of why Carrot cared so much for Pedro. Pedro was Carrot's teacher that raised her to be better. Pedro was the one who taught Carrot her fighting style and gave her the claw gloves. He was protective of her when she stowed away on the Straw Hat Pirates's ship but respected her enough that when Luffy welcomed her aboard, he did not try to find a way to get her off the boat. During his time in “One Piece” as a major character, Pedro has always been a sort of big brother to Carrot.
Unfortunately for the Straw Hat Pirates, while Pedro's sacrifice bought the Thousand Sunny some time to escape, Katakuri and the rest of Big Mom's crew were still barelling towards the escaping pirates. Luffy decides that to honor Pedro's sacrifice, he has to make a sacrifice himself even if it means being separated from the rest of the Straw Hat Pirate crew. Fans will have to wait for “One Piece” episode 851 to see how Luffy's fight with Charlotte Katakuri in the Mirror-world will turn out for him and the escaping Straw Hat Pirate crew.
