OpenAI is stepping into Hollywood with plans to support an upcoming animated film created largely with artificial intelligence. According to the Wall Street Journal, the AI leader is partnering on Critterz, an original feature from Chad Nelson, a creative specialist at OpenAI. The movie is expected to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2026.
Critterz follows a group of forest creatures who embark on an adventure after their village is disrupted. Nelson previously released a short film based on the same concept, and is now collaborating with production companies in London and Los Angeles to bring the story to the big screen.
The project’s budget is under $30 million, significantly lower than typical animated productions, which often cost hundreds of millions. To balance cost and creativity, the film will mix human talent with AI tools. Professional voice actors will bring characters to life, while human artists provide hand-drawn sketches that will then be refined and expanded using AI models, including ChatGPT’s image generation technology.
By combining traditional artistry with AI innovation, OpenAI aims to highlight how artificial intelligence can reshape filmmaking. The company is lending both computing resources and creative tools to the production, underscoring its commitment to advancing AI-powered storytelling.
If successful, Critterz could mark a turning point for the entertainment industry, proving that AI can reduce production costs while maintaining visual and narrative quality. The film’s progress will be closely watched by both Hollywood and the tech community, as it represents one of the boldest attempts yet to merge AI and cinema on a feature scale.
