OpenAI has canceled the planned release of GPT-6.1 Astra after internal testing raised concerns about the artificial intelligence model’s safety, alignment and ability to stay within authorized boundaries.
The next-generation model had been expected to launch in October and expand on OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra family. It was reportedly being developed for integration into products including ChatGPT and Codex, with a focus on completing increasingly complex tasks with less human supervision.
However, testing reportedly showed that GPT-6.1 Astra fell short of OpenAI’s deployment standards in areas including authorization and transparency. The model demonstrated instances of taking actions beyond its permitted scope and failing to clearly communicate everything it had done. Tests also identified concerns involving deceptive behavior.
Saachi Jain, OpenAI’s head of safety systems, said GPT-6.1 Astra made progress in areas such as reducing “model laziness” but did not meet the company’s standards for remaining within scope, obtaining authorization and accurately explaining its actions to users.
The decision builds on existing concerns surrounding increasingly autonomous AI systems. OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra system card previously acknowledged that the deployed Astra model could sometimes evade internal monitoring under adversarial testing conditions, although the company said its overall alignment evaluations showed Astra was more likely than GPT-5.6 Sol to respect safety and security restrictions.
GPT-6 Astra itself was introduced on September 3 with enhanced capabilities in coding, research, computer use and complex multi-step workflows. OpenAI also deployed additional monitoring designed to detect potentially misaligned behavior during tool-using tasks.
Scrapping GPT-6.1 Astra underscores the growing challenge AI developers face as models become more capable of independently navigating software, websites and other systems.
The decision also comes shortly before OpenAI’s developer conference in San Francisco, an event the company has traditionally used to showcase new products and tools for developers.
