South Korean confectionery Orion Corp. has set up a 17,562-square-meter plant in Rajasthan, India to respond quickly to local market demands and cut back on logistics costs.
The Indian plant would be the 10th overseas factory for Orion, which also has plants in Vietnam, China, and Russia.
Although Orion owns the Indian facility, its local partner, processed food manufacturer Mann Ventures will oversee the plant operation. Orion's India-based office will take care of sales and marketing.
Orion offers products tailored to local palates and is expected to use the same strategy in India.
In October 2018, Orion set up a corporate body in India named Orion Nutritionals while distributing and selling products brought in from its Vietnam-based plant.
India boasts a confectionery market valued at around 17 trillion won annually.
Over 60 percent of Orion's sales are from overseas, with China accounting for 48.4 percent of sales, Vietnam with 12.1 percent, and Russia with 3.4 percent. Local sales accounted for 35.9 percent.
