‘Outlander’ season 3 is set to feature a reunion between Jamie and Claire in the 18th century. Star Caitriona Balfe, who plays Claire in the series, described the reunion to be “heartwarming” but “complicated.” Meanwhile, filming is set to take place in a coastal village in Scotland after Edinburgh.
On-set photographs posted on the The Scottish Sun showed Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan during filming in Edinburgh, Scotland. The two play main protagonists Claire and Jamie, respectively.
The third season of Starz’ British-American time travel drama television series adapted from Diana Gabaldon’s novels of the same name is set to feature the long-anticipated reunion between Claire and Jamie in a print shop on the Royal Mile after the two have been separated by centuries.
During an interview with Elle, Balfe hinted that although Claire and Jamie will have a "very heartwarming, very tender" reunion, their circumstances are not without complications. She said during the pre-Golden Globes BAFTA tea in Los Angeles, "You can't keep these two apart, really… We do spend some time on what both of the characters go through when they're separated.”
She continued, “We see a lot of Jamie's life in those 20 years, and we see some of Claire's. My story picks up where we left at the end of episode one, season two. So you'll see definitely some Tobias Menzies, which is never a bad thing, I would say."
Season 3 is reportedly based on the third book in Gabaldon’s series, titled “Voyager.” In the original novel, Claire finds out that Jamie survived the infamous Battle of Culloden and attempts to find out what has become of him through historical records. She then returns to the mystical stone circle and travels back in time from 1945 to 1743 to look for him.
Balfe explained, "It's also very fraught… because I think anyone who's spent any time apart from someone that they love, even if it's just a long-distance relationship, once you see each other again, you have all the expectations, and you have all of the things that you think you'll say, and the way you think it'll go. Life's never like that. I love that it's kind of complicated."
In addition to filming in Edinburgh, cast and crew will also shoot in a coastal village Ayrshire county in Scotland. According to the Daily Record, Dunure has been transformed into the film set that includes a line of wooden buildings from the 18th century. Filming is scheduled to commence during the weekend.
‘Outlander’ season 3 is expected to return to Starz sometime in 2017 as an official release date has yet to be announced.
