Just a few weeks since season 4 ended, the cast and crew of “Outlander” season 5 will be back on set next week to start filming. But starting production at this point sparked concerns that the series might miss a 2019 premiere.
During a panel interview at the TV Critics Association (TCA) winter press tour, Caitriona Balfe, who plays Claire Fraser, confirmed the production of “Outlander” season 5 will officially begin next week in Glasgow. The actress also provided bits of spoilers that their family will remain in America while she begins her journey as a first-time grandmother at the age of 54.
Since the show premiered in 2014, it offered a new season every year. The 16-episode run of season 1 was divided in two that aired in August 2014 and April 2015, respectively. Season 2 followed almost exactly a year later. But the following installments came out at a much later release date window in 2017 and 2018. The question now is whether “Outlander” season 5 could make it in 2019.
There were earlier reports claiming that the filming of an entire “Outlander” installment usually takes up to nine months. If “Outlander” season 5 will take the same amount of time to produce, that means filming might only be wrapping up by November.
That leaves a very small window for “Outlander” season 5 to have a 2019 release date since the show will need more time for post-production. In fact, when Starz ordered “Outlander” season 5 and season 6 in May 2018, there were reports at the time suggesting that the next premiere date might happen in 2020.
So far, Starz has not changed its 12-episode order of “Outlander” season 5 and season 6. These installments are expected to be based on Diana Gabaldon’s “The Fiery Cross” and “A Breath of Snow and Ashes,” respectively.
Spoilers are still scarce at this point. But Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie Fraser, promised that nothing gets easier in “Outlander” season 5. “It's really exciting for next season because it's going to set up that whole world and the different political sides with Murtagh... It's going to be tough. This is not the first time they've dealt with these things. And at first, Jamie thinks he can play it. He can play with fate and play with history, maybe to his detriment,” Heughan told Harper’s Bazaar.
