Since the start of 2017, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has continued to astound and surpass expectations, rocketing from relative obscurity to the top of the sales charts. At this point, it’s safe to say that Brendan Greene’s creation has managed to revolutionize the industry in unexpected ways, popularizing the Battle Royale format. Now, it seems PUBG is set to spark yet another revolution, this time in the form of its 3D replay technology.
In most other multiplayer games or even some single player titles, the replay button was simply intended to showcase the events that led to a player’s death or defeat. However, PUBG now employs a virtual overlay that basically provides players significantly more freedom. It allows players to become akin to gods, in a sense, Engadget reports.
The new technology is courtesy of Minkonet, a South Korean company that just opened an office in Los Angeles, California. As its first major client, Minkonet could not have asked for a better advertising force than PUBG. Apparently, the firm is currently flooded with requests from other video game companies to provide them with the same technology.
"We've been getting a lot of calls and a lot of interest," Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer Gilbert Kim told the publication. "Getting in new games is really competitive, and every feature counts, but we see data capture and replay technology is probably going to be mainstream in the next few years. ... I think this is going to unleash new content that's never been seen before in games, and it's just starting. It's just starting right now."
The replay tech that it offers doesn’t just capture video, it captures data, MSPowerUser notes. This allows players to choose any point of the map within a one-kilometer radius and view the events that occurred in those places. This gives gamers the chance to see what their enemies were doing, track their own character’s movements, and even capture favorite moments by setting them up as cinematic shots.
