‘Peaky Blinders’ season 4 is set to begin filming on March 2017 and may premiere on BBC Two as early as autumn 2017. It may follow Cillian Murphy’s Tommy Shelby as he struggles to regain control of the Peaky Blinders gang as their business expands to foreign territories.
According to The Independent, the much-anticipated season 4 of BBC Two’s crime-drama television series may hit the small screen as early as autumn next year. Filming is scheduled to begin March 2017 with Cillian Murphy set to return as the leader of the Peaky Blinders gang Tommy Shelby.
The 40-year old star said, “We start shooting the next series next March, I think… The success of it is down to really great writing. People in America love it, people in Australia love it, people in Poland love it – it’s mad.”
The series will pick up after the events of season 3, which found Tommy struggling with betrayal from key members of the crime family. Murphy said, “Everything has changed... I think his family think that he’s betrayed them. It’ll be up to Tommy to demonstrate to them that he hasn’t betrayed them and that he has a bigger plan. The question is what that bigger plan is. Who is he gonna call? What’s gonna happen to the family? Can he ever get that level of trust or love back again?”
It seems that the incoming season will focus on his challenges of turning things around once and for all, according to The Week. It may also focus on the Shelby family business’ expansion into foreign territories.
Murphy teased, "Because of what happened to him in the First World War it’s kind of…it’s never gonna stop.”
He continued, “He’ll always be this man searching for something and I think that even if he achieves all this material wealth and he achieves some sort of position of power, I don’t see him retiring with a pipe and slippers that’s for sure!”
Helen McCrory, who plays Polly Gray, admitted during an interview with South Africa’s Channel 24 that the series’ subject matter draws viewers in. She stressed that show’s appeal comes from dealing with the underground lives of society’s most downtrodden citizens.
She said, "We are used to British television exploring the upper echelons of society but not so used to watching it explore the below stairs as much - and the Peaky Blinders are not even that; they are the below, below stairs.”
McCrory plays Tommy’s Aunt Polly, the designated treasurer of Peaky Blinders. She is Tommy’s wing-woman and led the crime organization when Tommy, Arthur, and John were out fighting in WWI.
‘Peaky Blinders’ season 4’s official premiere date is yet to be announced. The series, based on the real-life Peaky Blinders gang and their exploits in England following WW I, was created by Steven Knight and produced by Caryn Mandabach Productions and Tiger Aspect Productions. Season 4 was greenlit on BBC on May 2016.
