When Ubisoft released the artwork and trailers for its newest entry into the Far Cry franchise, it naturally invited plenty of controversies. Someone even put up a Change.org petition for the game’s cancellation, which has garnered considerable support. What a lot of them seemed to have missed, however, is that the petition is a joke.
Titled “Cancel Far Cry 5,” the petition comes with a letter that brings up some points that, on the surface, might be mistaken as earnest issues against the game. There are telling signs that the whole thing is a joke, however, as a lot of the sections allude to issues that are almost stereotypical of gamers, Forbes notes. No video game enthusiast in their right mind would actually write such things.
“Us Gamers have had to endure a lot of crap over the last few years. The targeted harassment by the mainstream press through Gamergate,” the petition reads.
However, things really turn for the hilarious when getting to the portion that reads: “…the continued rejection of romantic partners when they find out our hobby, the appropriation of our culture by so-called “gamers” on twitter. NO MORE!”
The letter goes on to list ever increasing absurdities that no one but the most unaware supporter would have mistaken as a sincere complaint. For example, aside from asking Ubisoft to literally change who the villains are going to be in the game, the petition is even asking the developers to move the setting to Canada instead of America.
If not that, the petition asks that Ubisoft could at least change the premise of the antagonists and have them become “misguided patriots” who simply channeled their hatred towards the wrong group of people. For the cherry on top, the company responded to the petition by releasing an expanded version of the game’s artwork to include a black person. Hilarious.
