Pizza Hut Combines Traditional Japanese Udon Noodles with Bold Flavors in New Limited-Edition Pizza
As two of the leading pizza chains in Japan, Domino’s and Pizza Hut continuously strive to outdo each other with innovative and unique creations, much to the delight of pizza enthusiasts. Recently, Pizza Hut has extended this creativity to noodle lovers with its latest offering, a pizza featuring udon noodles as a topping.
The “Aromatic Dashi Meat Tempura Gobo Udon Pizza” incorporates udon noodles and showcases several distinctly Japanese ingredients. The pizza is topped with beef that has been marinated and slowly stewed in a sweet and spicy sauce, resulting in a rich, robust flavor. This savory taste is further enhanced by including wakame seaweed and cheese, adding an extra layer of umami.
The udon noodles are crafted from 100% domestic wheat, providing a smooth and chewy texture. Pizza Hut has added a special soy sauce broth made from bonito flakes, dried sardines, kelp, and shiitake mushrooms to maintain the tradition of pairing noodles with a sauce or broth. This mixture offers a sweet flavor commonly found in soy sauce-based noodle broths from the island of Kyushu, successfully recreating the essence of “Fukuoka udon,” a specialty of Fukuoka Prefecture.
The final element, tempura gobo (deep-fried burdock root), completes the distinct flavor profile of Fukuoka udon. Tempura burdock is a popular addition to udon dishes in the region and is considered a beloved dish by residents of Fukuoka Prefecture.
Pizza Hut Honors Fukuoka’s Udon Tradition with Limited-Time Collaboration Inspired by ‘The Udon Guy’
According to SoraNews24, this pizza’s focus on Fukuoka udon stems from a unique collaboration with Udon Map, a TNC TV West Japan television program featuring Akira Okazawa, known as “The Udon Guy.”Okazawa, who has introduced viewers to over 800 bowls of udon, is also known for his “udon exercises” and dance videos, which have become popular among local children.
Given Fukuoka’s reputation as the birthplace of tonkatsu (pork bone broth) ramen, the area is regarded as a “noodle mecca” by food enthusiasts. This pizza seeks to celebrate the local udon culture memorably and enjoyably.
As an homage to Fukuoka udon, this pizza will only be available for a limited time in Fukuoka and Saga prefectures. Noodle lovers in other regions must travel or create noodle pizza at home.
The medium-sized pizza will be available from August 10 to September 15, costing 1,980 yen (approximately USD 13.51).
