It looks like the strange Pokemon that started to appear last week isn’t a glitch after all. Niantic has confirmed that there is a new Mythical Pokemon called Meltan on “Pokemon Go,” but its abilities are still shrouded in mystery.
The Pokemon that baffled enthusiasts this past weekend has a body comparable to that of a Ditto, and it has a hexagonal head that looked a lot like a hex nut. According to the “Pokemon Go” website, Meltan is a Steel-type Pokemon, and its body is made of liquid metal, so it’s quite different from the shapeshifting Ditto. It appears that Meltan can use its body to absorb electricity from its surroundings and use it as a weapon.
When “Pokemon Go” enthusiasts tried to catch it, Meltan would simply turn into a Ditto. So how do players get one?
Right now, nobody knows for sure how to catch a Meltan. But as hinted in the official description on the “Pokemon Go” website, unlocking the Pokemon may involve some sort of Special Research task. Moreover, Niantic will likely reveal more once Nintendo releases “Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu!” and “Pokemon: Let’s Go, Eevee!” on the Nintendo Switch in November 2018. As of the moment, Nintendo seems to be using Meltan as a promotional piece for the games.
A new trailer for the “Pokemon: Let’s Go” games shows that Professor Oak has been in contact with Professor Willow as they try to learn more about Meltan, and it appears that players will have to spend some time playing “Pokemon Go” if they want to unlock the new Pokemon in “Pokemon: Let’s Go.” As noted before by Nintendo, Pokemon caught in “Pokemon Go” can be transferred over to the upcoming “Pokemon: Let’s Go” games.
For now, “Pokemon Go” players will have to sit and wait if they want to get their hands on the Mythical Pokemon.
