Despite public silence, private efforts to influence President Joe Biden to withdraw from the presidential race persist. Democratic insiders, citing dire internal polling data, continue to urge Biden and his advisers to reconsider, fearing significant electoral losses.
Private Lobbying Efforts Persist Amid Declining Public Calls for Biden's Withdrawal
Although public calls for President Joe Biden to withdraw from the presidential campaign have recently declined, it is crucial to acknowledge that private endeavors to influence the president and his top aides are still extremely active. These details were obtained from numerous Democratic sources who communicated with CNN.
According to these sources, Stanley Greenberg, a seasoned and respected Democratic pollster, has submitted numerous memoranda that suggest Biden is on the brink of losing the election. These memos, intended to inflict significant harm on other Democratic candidates, cause concern.
In recent days, Greenberg sent a polling memo to Biden's inner circle, which one Democrat characterized as "losing everything." A second Democrat acquainted with the Greenberg memos responded with a single word: "Devastating."
The sources stated that Greenberg had sent numerous memos in the past two weeks since the president's disastrous debate performance. In these memos, he has analyzed internal polling and asserted that the president's position continues to deteriorate because Americans overwhelmingly do not recognize him as capable of serving an additional four years.
For decades, Greenberg has been a prominent Democratic pollster. His expertise has been instrumental in the success of Bill Clinton's two presidential campaigns. When contacted on July 15, he declined to respond.
These sources also reported that numerous Democratic members of Congress have continued to lobby privately, imploring top Biden advisers to consider the potential harm to Biden's legacy if the president loses the White House but maintains control of the House and the Senate majority.
Senior Aides Hopeful Amid Biden's Determination to Stay in the Race
According to a Democratic lawmaker, certain senior Biden aides comprehend the "depth of this," but they are optimistic that it can be resolved. They also characterize the president as resolute in his conviction that he can prevail. For instance, during his Monday (July 15) interview with NBC News, the president reiterated his reluctance to relinquish his position.
The lawmaker believed that it was counterproductive to issue additional public calls for Biden to resign at this time, as a unified party response to the Republican convention this week and the president's repeated public statements about remaining in the campaign were both critical factors.
However, this Democrat anticipated that this strategy would be altered if the polling and other data from the GOP convention indicated that the president's popularity was declining more rapidly. This potential shift in strategy based on future data is something to keep an eye on.
