Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani discussed de-escalation with U.S. President Donald Trump Friday, emphasizing diplomatic engagement as a way to contain the regional crisis.

The Qatari Emiri Diwan said Al Thani also stressed freedom of navigation and energy supply security. The leaders reviewed Qatar-U.S. ties and ways to strengthen them, the statement said. They also discussed international diplomatic efforts and Doha’s mediation role, which the Diwan said was intended to help negotiations resolve the crisis. Al Thani called for sustained dialogue and diplomatic initiatives to limit further escalation, the readout said.

Anadolu Agency reported that Qatar and Pakistan are mediating between Washington and Tehran in efforts to end the conflict. The agency said the fighting began after U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran in late February.

Reuters separately reported that Qatari intermediaries went to Tehran on Monday to discuss a draft proposal.
