The mobile chipmaking giant Qualcomm is currently battling enemies at multiple fronts, with the lawsuit involving Apple and its partners, as well as the Broadcom hostile takeover hovering over the company like a dark cloud. As such, it needs some pretty powerful allies to help it weather the storm, which is where Samsung comes in. A partnership between the two tech brands was just announced with regards to developing 5G wireless mobile internet technology.
As Qualcomm notes in its announcement post, the two companies are basically working out the compatibility between the X50 chipset that it revealed last year and the 7nm EUV lithography process that Samsung showed offer back in May of 2017. Both companies are basically expanding their foundry arrangement to encompass 5G connectivity.
“Using 7LPP EUV process technology, Snapdragon 5G mobile chipsets will offer a smaller chip footprint, giving OEMs more usable space inside upcoming products to support larger batteries or slimmer designs. Process improvements, combined with a more advanced chip design, are expected to bring significant improvements in battery life,” the post reads.
By doing this, Samsung gets a considerable advantage over other smartphone makers, which are still trying to cope with the advancements in 5G connectivity. Other major manufacturers have been trying to develop their own modems or relying on providers like Intel to do so.
Samsung has expressed a considerable level of enthusiasm with regards to this new arrangement, with the company’s executive vice president of foundry sales and marketing team, Charlie Bae noting how the development is a huge milestone for the South Korean giant.
“We are pleased to continue to expand our foundry relationship with Qualcomm Technologies in 5G technologies using our EUV process technology,” Bae said. “This collaboration is an important milestone for our foundry business as it signifies confidence in Samsung’s leading process technology.”
