Qualcomm provided details about its latest chip designed for Microsoft Windows-based laptops. The company promises this chip will outperform Apple's Mac chips in certain tasks.
The Snapdragon Elite X chip, slated for release next year, has been specifically engineered to enhance artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities such as email summarization, text generation, and image creation.
Qualcomm's AI Integration
Reuters reported that Qualcomm executives revealed that their AI-driven features will also be incorporated into smartphone chips, with Google and Meta expressing their intent to leverage these capabilities.
As per a Fast Company report, Tuesday's announcement follows reports that Microsoft has encouraged Qualcomm, Nvidia, and Advanced Micro Devices to develop new chips to cater to the growing demand for AI features in Windows.
Qualcomm's Senior Vice President Alex Katouzian highlighted the chip's ability to handle AI models with an impressive 13 billion parameters. This parameter count is a proxy measure of sophistication for AI systems that generate text or images.
Such capabilities are increasingly sought after, with companies like Adobe enabling AI to create images for various applications.
Challenging Apple's Dominance
During the Qualcomm event, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella joined via video appearance to express the potential of these chips in ushering in a new era of "AI PCs" for both businesses and consumers. Nadella emphasized the significance of a new system architecture being developed, stating, "The work we're doing together is going to bring together experiences that cannot be done without a new system architecture."
Qualcomm aims to challenge Apple's dominance in the laptop market. Since introducing custom-designed Mac chips in 2020, Apple has effectively doubled its market share. Qualcomm claims that its X Elite chip outperforms Apple's M2 Max chip in some tasks and is more energy-efficient than both Apple and Intel PC chips.
Rising Demand for AI-powered laptops
Experts predict the demand for laptops with AI capabilities will surge as smaller businesses, individual designers, and creators rely on these devices.
From real estate brochures to beer can labels, the ability to generate images using AI is becoming indispensable. Francis Sideco, an analyst with TIRIAS Research, affirms that "they need that kind of capability."
