During an appearance on ABC's "This Week," Lawler criticized the faction of Republicans considering Johnson's removal, labeling such a move as "stupid." He emphasized that Johnson inherited a challenging situation following the ousting of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, an event Lawler described as "the single stupidest thing I've ever seen in politics." Lawler warned that removing Johnson would be equally detrimental, stating, "These folks are playing with fire, and if they think they're somehow going to get a more conservative speaker, they're kidding themselves."

The Republican Party is experiencing internal strife over Johnson's leadership, particularly regarding his handling of a recent spending bill that averted a government shutdown. With Republicans expected to hold 219 seats when Congress reconvenes, Johnson can afford to lose only one Republican vote if all Democrats oppose him. Notably, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) has already expressed his intention to vote against Johnson, and other GOP hardliners remain undecided.

He expressed frustration with colleagues engaging in what he termed "a nonsensical intramural food fight," stressing the importance of having a speaker in place to certify President-elect Donald Trump's election on January 6th. Lawler stated, "We can't get anything done unless we have a speaker... To waste time over a nonsensical intramural food fight is a joke."
