Much like any popular show with a dedicated following, The CW's modern live-action reimagining of the classic pocket comics has thrived upon fan speculation to build anticipation for its next story to tell. These juicy fan theories include the possible connection of former Southside Serpent Penny Peabody to the Cooper family's tendency for keeping secrets.
Back in November 2017, Reddit user u/-lCrackers posted a fan theory that Penny Peabody was the mastermind behind the Black Hood. One of the important cornerstones of the theory is the potential fact that Betty Cooper is Penny Peabody's estranged daughter. The theory is built on the premise that to explore Betty's darker personality, she may have a not-so-perfect past herself. Alice Cooper, who eventually left the Southside, may have taken the child from Penny Peabody during the latter's earlier, irresponsible days with the Southside Serpents.
While some of the theory's major points have been debunked by “Riverdale” season 2's finale reveal that Hal Cooper – Betty's own father – was the Black Hood, Alice Cooper's history in Southside could still potentially be linked to Penny Peabody considering how vague Alice Cooper's history with the Southside Serpents is even with 2 seasons of “Riverdale”
“Riverdale” season 3 could potentially explore this route considering that the season seems to be focusing on the fallout of Jughead's actions, which has left the Southside Serpents decimated and revealed Penny Peabody to be working for Hiram Lodge. This gives Peabody a bigger role in the upcoming third season, potentially opening up her backstory even further.
