Considering the debacle that was the Walmart SNES Classic pre-order cancellations that recently occurred, it’s only natural that companies would be a little cautious about making announcements about the same topic. In a recent development, Nintendo finally gave fans a hint of when they can actually pre-order a unit and it’s happening at an unspecified time this month.
The launch date for the SNES Classic is set for September 29th, so this doesn’t leave a lot of room to move for anyone who wants a unit for themselves. With a little less than two months to go, customers are going to be scrambling over each other. It’s just unfortunate that the statement released by Nintendo regarding the pre-order schedule has nothing specific.
“We appreciate the incredible anticipation that exists for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition system, and can confirm that it will be made available for pre-order by various retailers late this month,” the statement reads. “A significant amount of additional systems will be shipped to stores for launch day, and throughout the balance of the calendar year.”
The $80 console is said to have substantially more units available than the NES Classic, which was ridiculously rare, by anyone’s standard. Unfortunately, even with a higher number of the consoles shipped, the lack of confirmation of production going beyond 2017 is still going to cause a huge amount of anxiety.
Aside from the nostalgia factor, there are also plenty of other reasons for why customers are simply dying to get their hands on the mini console. For one thing, it’s officially released by Nintendo, so there’s the brand loyalty to consider. Then there’s the matter of convenience since having lots of pre-installed games removes a lot of the hassle involved with emulators, Forbes pointed out.
In any case, at this point, customers can only hope to catch wind of the pre-orders becoming available before the units run out. That means a lot of checking for notifications from now until release date.
