German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reaffirmed Europe's ability to protect its trade interests in discussions with the United States, emphasizing the European Union's economic strength. Following a meeting with EU leaders, Scholz stated that the bloc has "every opportunity to look after our own interests," while maintaining strong transatlantic ties.
Scholz praised Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum’s diplomatic handling of U.S. tariff threats from former President Donald Trump, calling her a “smart politician” who navigated the situation with composure.
Addressing EU defense policy, Scholz pointed out issues such as fragmentation and a lack of large-scale joint defense initiatives. He stressed the need for a more unified procurement strategy to strengthen Europe’s security framework.
The German chancellor also responded to Trump's recent demand that Ukraine provide rare earth minerals to the U.S. in exchange for additional aid. Scholz criticized the proposal as "selfish" and argued that Ukraine's resources should be preserved for post-war reconstruction rather than foreign trade.
Scholz’s remarks underscore the EU's determination to assert its strategic independence while balancing relations with global powers.
