Scientists Create App To Improve Students’ Academic Performance

Even with recent changes in how several countries approach education, the academic performance is still a huge factor that affects the future of children. As a result, scientists are constantly looking for ways to improve this aspect and a group came up with a solution in the form of an app. The app is meant to be used by teachers and students in order to improve intellectual capabilities, reasoning, and critical thinking.

The app was developed by Australian researchers at the Swinburne University of Technology and it is a fully customizable setup that allows teachers to achieve goals in a manner that they want, Phys.org reports. The app would then be able to produce effects like increase competitiveness among students, motivate better learning practices, or just outright making them more engaged in education.

In the results of the study, researchers observed that there was a correlation between improvements in the performance of students when using the apps and in their academic performance. In fact, the data indicated marked improvements in the performance of the students who used the app compared to those that didn’t.

In the paper that the researchers published, the goal is simply to see if a gaming app would actually have a positive effect on students under the right conditions. Considering the results, it seems that this is exactly the case.

“Created to better engage students in lecture content, the app was used to deliver multiple-choice content-based quizzes directly to students’ personal mobile devices post-lecture and pre-tutorial,” the paper’s Abstract reads. “After measuring the relationships between students’ app usage and their engagement, retention and academic achievement in the subject, it is suggested that following the app’s introduction, student retention rates and academic performance increased, and there was a positive correlation between students’ scoring highly on the app and achieving higher academic grades.”
