There’s still no news surrounding “Sherlock” Season 5 and it seems that the show will not be returning on television. Or at least, in the foreseeable future.
Although the stars and show creators have expressed their desire to make Sherlock” Season 5, their hands are also tied with their respective responsibilities. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are bounded by their MCU contracts at the moment, with other projects vying for their talents as well, Bustle reported.
Meanwhile, show creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat are also busy with their new “Dracula” series, which they’re making in collaboration with Netflix and BBC. In short, one of the biggest obstacles that are hindering the production of “Sherlock” Season 5 is the cast and writers’ schedules.
Another reason why “Sherlock” Season 5 isn’t returning anytime soon is due to the friction between Cumberbatch and Freeman themselves. It can be recalled that Freeman expressed his distaste at the toxic behavior of fans and their unrealistically high expectations for the series’ story. In response, Cumberbatch said that it was a “pathetic” statement to make, Independent reported.
“It’s pretty weak to blame that on fans. You’re either along for the ride or not, and I think to be kowtowing would, in some cases, disappoint fans,” Cumberbatch said. Freeman then clarified his stance, saying that he’s grateful for the things that the show has done for all of the people involved in creating it, including himself. As for Gatiss and Moffat, both writers are still interested in pursuing “Sherlock” Season 5 although they did admit that it would take years before they could gather everyone again.
Gatiss previously said that if a fifth installment is happening, it would take at least four years before they seriously consider making another entry. Going by this statement, fans could be looking at a 2022 or 2023 release date for “Sherlock” Season 5. And that is baking that the series won’t face any unforeseen hurdles in the future.
