“Sherlock” season 5 is one of those most-awaited series and fans are disappointed because they have been waiting for so long already. Season 4 concluded in January 2017 so the show has been on hiatus for more than a year now.
Also, it is a frustrating waiting game for fans as BBC cannot even confirm if there will be a “Sherlock” season 5 or not. The viewers can only get new updates if the cast or the showrunners talk about the series in their interviews.
It cannot be denied that information about “Sherlock” season 5 is so scarce that sometimes, even comments from outsiders can create a stir among the fans. For instance, Chris Georgiou, the owner of a café where the show’s production crew was said to have hung out while filming, said that he overheard that the show would return.
This was reported by Time Out and picked up by various media outlets. It eventually reached Mark Gatiss, a co-producer of the series and the actor who plays Mycroft Holmes, and he denied the news via Twitter, saying it was “utter nonsense.”
Furthermore, it seems that Martin Freeman (John H. Watson) does not want to work on “Sherlock” season 5 anymore. He said this was because of the increasing fan expectation and he feels it is impossible to live up to the hype.
"It's not a thing to be enjoyed, it's a thing of, 'You better f*** do this, that's not fun anymore,” Telegraph quoted him as saying.
Freeman’s comment was heavily criticized by the fans and even Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock Holmes) found such a statement “pathetic.” The actor sided with their supporters and said that he should not feel that way towards the fan’s excitement over the show.
This difference in views is probably one of the reasons why the fifth installment cannot go into production yet. In addition, most of the actors in “Sherlock” season 5 are currently busy with their own projects so it is hard to get them all other for filming.
Then again, despite these conflicts, there is hope that “Sherlock” season 5 is still happening. Mark Gratis disclosed that the door is still open for them to film new episodes; however, it may take a while.
When he attended the premiere of “Christopher Robin,” he said that that they left the show in a place where they can come back. He also confirmed that they are filming “Dracula” now and it may take two and a half years before they are done. In the end, he confirmed that there is still no immediate prospect for “Sherlock” season 5 but they are not saying they will never make it.
