“Sherlock” season 5 is still not in sight and it seems that it will not be coming any time soon. There have been many speculations on when the show is returning but none proved to be correct.
Previously, it was rumored that “Sherlock” season 5 is going to start its production soon. The information was shared by Chris Georgiou, owner of the café where the “Sherlock” crew used to hang out when they were still filming in the U.K. He told Time Out that he overheard that the fifth season was coming very soon. But in a tweet, Mark Gatiss denied the claims.
Meanwhile, co-creator Steven Moffat spoke with Digital Spy last year and he said that all of them in the production honestly assumed that “Sherlock” season 5 is going to happen but they just did not know when it will be.
“I haven't really thought about it. Mark has been doing other stuff as well, so we haven't sat down and had a proper talk about what we would do with another series," he shared.
Now OtakuKart reported that Mark Gatiss, who also plays Mycroft Holmes in the series, recently revealed that it may take some years from now before “Sherlock” season 5 actually returns.
It further noted that the actor is trying to be transparent to avoid leading the show’s fans. He does not want them to have false hopes so he is honestly stating that their drama is not coming soon as popularly speculated. Mark Gatiss finally admitted that “Sherlock” is at least “four years off.”
Lastly, he went on to explain that Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock Holmes) and Martin Freeman’s (John H. Watson) schedules are other factors that are causing the holdup of “Sherlock” season 5.
“It was very, very, very difficult to schedule the fourth series concerning Benedict’s and Martin’s availability, and everyone’s availability, so it’s not easy,” Mark Gatiss remarked. “It’s not a lack of will, it’s just about practicality.”
