After two years since the fourth installment concluded, BBC has yet to make an announcement about “Sherlock” season 5. But on the bright side, showrunners Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat have both expressed their eagerness to continue the show.
Gatiss and Moffat, a highly renowned duo of series creators, have been putting their own spin to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's works for TV. Meanwhile, actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have been portraying Sherlock and Dr. Watson, respectively, from the beginning. And even the actors have previously shown enthusiasm in working on “Sherlock” season 5.
Whenever Gatiss and Moffat are asked about the chance of making a “Sherlock” season 5. They never evade the question and, instead, tell fans that they also want to see more of the Sherlock and Dr. Watson's adventures. It's just that jumping back to the world of Baker Street is quite impossible at the moment.
“Nobody has ever closed the door on ‘Sherlock.’ … We haven’t got an immediate plan, but I would remain surprised, given the collective enthusiasm we have for it, if we didn’t do it again. … It’s not the kind of show that has to come back all the time. It can revisit,” Moffat told Radio Times when asked about returning for “Sherlock” season 5.
More recently, Gatiss and Moffat reiterated to the same publication that they are still very willing to work on “Sherlock” season 5 should BBC green lights its renewal. However, Gatiss explained that it cannot happen at the moment saying, “One thing at a time. ‘Dracula’ occupies a lot of headspace.”
Both Gatiss and Moffat are signed to develop the “Dracula” TV miniseries based on the same title 1897 novel. This project will also air on BBC and on Netflix. This could also be the reason why the British network remains mum on the renewal of “Sherlock” season 5. They might not want to divide fans’ attention in favor of “Dracula.”
