The information drought surrounding “Shrek 5” is still persisting even though the fifth entry is touted to come out this year. From its production, plot, casts, and exact date of release – nothing substantial has been revealed so far, Variety reported.
All we know is that “Shrek 5” is looking to reinvent the entire series, although the creators are careful not to mess with the characters’ voices. So far, only Eddie Murphy has confirmed he’ll be reprising his role.
Mike Myers and Antonio Banderas, on the other hand, has yet to break their silence about their involvement in “Shrek 5,” although it’s safe to assume that both actors will be included in its making. After all, it’s their distinct voices that truly fleshed out those characters on screen.
As for who’s handling the writing of “Shrek 5,” IMDB lists Michael McCullers as the guy spearheading the screenplay, while Christopher Meledandri will be overseeing the film’s narrative. Both are no strangers in creating animated films as McCullers is behind the creation of “The Boss Baby” and Meledandri handled the making of “Despicable Me.”
Meledandri previously said that the challenge in creating “Shrek 5” is finding an avenue that is both fresh and justifies the creation of the fifth entry. And since the script has already been penned, it appears that Meledandri and McCullers have found the formula after all.
Whether this approach will translate positively with fans, however, remains to be seen. But some are already convinced that the story of “Shrek 5” will captivate audiences. Whatever the case, the fifth entry is happening and the grouchy and hilarious ogre will be returning to the big screen.
When that will be is anyone’s guess at the moment as Dreamworks Animation and Universal Pictures have yet to break their silence regarding “Shrek 5.” It was previously rumored that it will come out on May 3 but that proved off the mark. There’s not even a trailer for the film yet.
Multiple outlets have previously speculated that “Shrek 5” will be coming out in 2019. However, since production has yet to begin, it’s best to remain skeptical for now. But despite the lack of new information, fans are simply happy that Shrek is returning. It was initially assumed that the franchise has died in 2010 but it appears that the adventures of the swamp-dweller aren’t ogre just yet.
