The anticipation for “Shrek 5” is still there even if the fans have been waiting for a long time already, more than five years to be exact. But even so, everyone should know that this Dreamworks animation is still in the cards, which means it will still be released despite the time gap.
Will it be back?
In fact, Dreamworks and NBCUniversal already laid out plans for “Shrek 5,” and this has been sealed some months after the movie was confirmed to return. The planning and pre-production work for this movie continued until 2017, and by then, the newly-hired writer, Michael McCullers, had completed the script already.
“I finished that script which I really, really, really love and it’s really personal to me,” the writer told The Hollywood Reporter more than two years ago. “It’s got a pretty big reinvention behind it that I guess I can’t really reveal, but since DreamWorks was sold to Universal in that time for over $3 billion, I imagine they’re particularly interested in it stepping up and actually figuring out the future of the franchise in that way on the corporate level.”
Moreover, as an indication that Dreamworks and NBCUniversal have not given up on the film yet, the studios reconfirmed that the movie is coming. This was in 2016, and a new update has yet to come up. But one thing is sure, “Shrek 5” has not been canceled.
What to expect
“Shrek 5” is one of NBCUniversal’s first projects that was approved after it acquired Dreamworks. The studio wants to continue the franchise, but they will give it a bit of twist by changing the plot and theme. This means that they will be reinventing the movie as they are targeting the modern-day moviegoers.
After the plannings and the storyline has been decided on, they said that “Shrek 5” will offer something that most people of today will be able to relate to. Thus, it can be assumed that it will be a modernized “Shrek” film, which is interesting.
Meanwhile, “Shrek 5” is said to have been scheduled for release on cinemas in September 2022. iMDB posted that this date is set for the U.S., but it is possible that worldwide release will be on the same day as well.
