Ichabod Crane will no longer return to the small screen.
“Sleepy Hollow,” the Fox supernatural series based on the story of Washington Irving, has been canceled after four seasons, io9 said. The show, which debuted strong in 2013 thanks to the chemistry between lead stars Tom Mison, who plays Ichabod Crane, and Nicole Beharie, who played police officer Abbie Mills, slowly lost viewers towards the second season.
However, it managed a third installment, but ended with a shocking finale by killing off Beharie’s character, ushering Season 4 with a new partner. Since Season 3, “Sleepy Hollow” was transferred to a Friday slot, considered a low-traffic schedule (and potential cancellation), Deadline noted. For the show’s fourth season, it only averaged 3.2 million viewers, which is a bit modest.
Fox chairman Gary Newman said in January that despite the show’s struggles, the network still loves “Sleepy Hollow.” He added, “Bringing a show out on Friday night is tough. We love the show, we think the storytelling has always been incredibly inventive, and Ichabod is fantastic.”
IGN said “Sleepy Hollow” is just one of the several show casualties in the last few weeks. Fox also cancelled “Rosewood” after just two seasons.
