South Korea issued a recall for almost 29,000 vehicle units made by various major brands. Based on the report, the models were from six major auto companies in the country, and it includes both foreign and local names.
The Korea Herald reported that South Korea announced on Wednesday, Aug. 11, that it is recalling 28,946 vehicles involving 35 different models. These were locally made or imported, and the brands include Mercedes-Benz Korea, BMW Korea, Jaguar Land Rover Korea, Honda Korea, Hyundai Motor, and Toyota Motor Korea.
The country’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said that 10,407 of the recalled vehicles are Hyundai Motor’s Grand Starex units. These are the nine-seater van, and they are being recalled due to issues related to propeller shafts.
“Damages were found on the connecting parts of propeller shafts,” Korea’s MOLIT said. “This can trigger a failure of power transmission to the rear wheels and halt the vehicle while driving.”
For Mercedes-Benz Korea, 4,781 cars are being recalled, and these consist of three models. The MOLIT cited software errors in the engine control as the reason for the call back. The agency said this can cause the car’s engine to continue running even while the car is turned off.
As for BMW Korea, 15 models reaching a total of 5,656 units are affected by the recall. The issue found here is related to brake vacuum pumps. The said parts were found to have a tendency to malfunction under some conditions and may make brake pedals heavy and increase braking distance.
The Korean unit of Toyota Motor will have to recall 488 units of two of its models for software collision defects. It was mentioned that this can potentially cause accidents due to latency in driver assistance functions before the collision.
Jaguar Land Rover Korea’s four models have defective battery bolts and may lead to sudden turning off of the ignition while driving. The company needs to fix 721 vehicles. And lastly, Honda Korea is recalling 6,692 units from nine of its models because their rear safety reflectors have reportedly failed to meet safety standards.
Meanwhile, this is the latest vehicle recall as in May, Pulse News reported that 700,000 units of Hyundai and Kia were also called back in S. Korea over fire risk. Mercedes-Benz also voluntarily recalled thousands of units for defective parts. Renault Samsung Motors, Toyota Korea, GM Korea, BMW Korea were also included in this recall as well.
