SpaceX's Starlink services may reach South Korea by early 2025, contingent on regulatory approval. The Ministry of Science and ICT has initiated key amendments to prevent frequent interference, signaling progress toward Starlink's introduction in underserved regions of the country.
South Korea Advances Toward Starlink Launch with Key Regulatory Amendments to Prevent Frequency Interference
There's a promising possibility that Starlink services will be directed toward South Korea by early 2025. According to Teslarati, the availability of Starlink in South Korea, contingent upon the local government's regulatory revisions, could bring a stable connection to SpaceX's internet services without disrupting the existing providers in the country, offering a new and reliable option for internet users.
The Ministry of Science and ICT in South Korea has reportedly taken a significant step towards the potential launch of Starlink services. On October 16, 2024, they issued a 60-day public notice about technical standard amendments. These modifications, designed to prevent frequency interference, are crucial to the regulatory process.
Once the technical standards are amended, Starlink is one step closer to launching in South Korea. In its thorough approach, the government is anticipated to require approximately three to four months to approve Starlink Korea's cross-board supply agreement with SpaceX. Furthermore, the Ministry of Government Legislation will be needed to evaluate the supply agreement, ensuring a comprehensive and secure process.
Starlink to Focus on Underserved Areas in South Korea Amid Modest Initial Demand, Says Local Media
The Korea Post, a local media agency, anticipates modest initial demand for Starlink services. SpaceX is expected to expand its Starlink market in South Korea by focusing on underserved regions, including islands, remote mountain regions, and maritime locations.
South Korea is well-connected in terms of internet service. The South Korean government's high priority on high-speed internet, resulting in the pervasive use of services and the implementation of numerous regulations, is a point of pride. The nation is recognized for possessing one of the world's quickest internet networks, as per Statista. The vast availability of services in South Korea is suggested by the fact that approximately 94% of the population utilizes the Internet.
